Dr Johanna F Jarvis, Company Owner

Johanna’s interest in astronomy began at a very young age and after completing her school education she achieved her MPhys Astrophysics at the University of Sussex then moved to Keele University to study for her PhD. Her research thesis (entitled “On the Origin of Lithium-Rich Stars in Open Clusters: Detailed Spectroscopy using the Very Large Telescope”) was looking at one of the first confirmed chemically polluted stars; a member of the open cluster NGC 6633.

She took a break from professional research between 2007 and 2013 allowing her to focus upon combining professional experience, academic links and passion for astronomy in the newly formed company, Astronomy Tuition.

Alongside running Astronomy Tuition Johanna now works as an associate lecture for the Open University delivering at various times the S104 Exploring Science, S282 Astronomy and S382 Astrophysics modules. She also holds a 3 year part-time Daphne Jackson Research Fellowship in the Astrophysics Department at the Open University. With a research interest in the discovery of exoplanets, their wider population statistics and spectroscopy of exoplanet host stars she utilises the Physics Innovations Robotic Telescope Explorer (PIRATE) a remotely operated telescope on the island of Mallorca.
